Work Stoppage

A work stoppage is an interruption of work, often associated with a strike, lockout or other collective dispute. The term describes the interruption without necessarily identifying its legal cause.

Example

Production stops during an industrial dispute, and reports distinguish the duration and affected work from the underlying action that caused it.

What to keep in mind

Not every interruption has the same legal status. Identify whether the stoppage is worker action, employer action, a safety response or an operational failure before drawing conclusions about rights or obligations.
