Medical Examination

A medical examination assesses health through an appropriately qualified professional. Employment-related examinations should have a lawful, role-relevant purpose and protect confidential information.

Example

For a role with defined physical or safety requirements, an employer obtains an appropriate occupational assessment at the permitted stage of recruitment.

What to keep in mind

Avoid requesting broad medical information without justification. Rules on timing, consent, disability and use of results vary, and managers generally need functional advice rather than a complete medical history.
