AWOL

AWOL means absent without leave. In a workplace context, it describes an absence that has not been authorised or explained according to the applicable attendance process.

Example

An employee does not attend an assigned shift and has not notified the manager, so the employer records the initial absence and attempts contact.

What to keep in mind

AWOL is a description of the information available, not proof of misconduct or resignation. Investigate the circumstances and consider emergencies or protected reasons before deciding on an appropriate response.
