Learning and Development

Learning and development, or L&D, is the work of building capabilities that help people perform and progress. It includes formal training, coaching, practice, feedback and learning through work.

Example

An L&D team combines a short workshop with supervised practice and manager feedback to help new supervisors conduct effective performance conversations.

What to keep in mind

Begin with the capability needed and the work problem to solve. A large course catalogue or high completion rate does not by itself demonstrate that employees can apply what they learned.
