Job Enrichment

Job enrichment changes a job to provide greater responsibility, autonomy or opportunities to use judgement. It aims to make the work more meaningful rather than simply adding similar tasks.

Example

A customer-support adviser receives authority to resolve specified complaints, review recurring issues and propose improvements instead of escalating every decision.

What to keep in mind

Authority needs clear boundaries, training and support. Giving someone accountability without control over the relevant decisions or resources can increase pressure without delivering the intended benefits of enrichment.
