First Year Turnover

First-year turnover measures departures among employees within their first year of employment. A useful cohort approach follows a defined group of starters through a full year.

Example

Of 40 employees hired in a particular quarter, eight leave before their first anniversary, giving a completed-cohort first-year turnover rate of 20%.

What to keep in mind

Do not compare a fully observed cohort with recent starters who have not reached a year. Define departure categories and distinguish this measure from the share of all departures involving newer employees.
