Competency Mapping

Competency mapping identifies the capabilities needed for particular roles and compares them with available evidence of people's capabilities. It supports development, selection and workforce decisions.

Example

A service team maps required troubleshooting, communication and product-knowledge competencies, then uses observed work to identify areas where each employee needs support.

What to keep in mind

Use observable evidence and clear proficiency levels. Self-ratings can help start a discussion but should not be treated as a complete or objective measure of someone's competence.
