Absence Management

Absence management coordinates how an employer records, responds to and supports periods when employees cannot attend work. It includes communication, appropriate support and planning for operational coverage.

Example

A manager checks in with an absent employee at an agreed interval, arranges cover and discusses support for a suitable return when appropriate.

What to keep in mind

The aim should not be to pressure people to work while unwell. Consider confidentiality, disability-related needs and applicable leave rights when using attendance triggers or discussing repeated absence.
