Hardship Allowance

A hardship allowance is additional compensation for working or living in conditions the employer classifies as particularly difficult. It is often associated with certain international or remote assignments.

Example

An employer provides an allowance for an assignment at a remote location with limited services, according to a defined location-assessment policy.

What to keep in mind

An allowance does not replace the duty to manage safety and health risks. State eligibility and review rules rather than implying that extra pay makes an unsafe assignment acceptable.
