Co Employment

Co-employment describes arrangements in which more than one organisation may share employer-related responsibilities for a worker. Its legal meaning and consequences vary by jurisdiction and arrangement.

Example

A staffing agency pays a worker assigned to a client, while the client directs day-to-day tasks and controls conditions at its workplace.

What to keep in mind

A contract dividing responsibilities does not necessarily remove statutory obligations. Clarify supervision, pay, safety and complaint handling, and distinguish commercial use of the term from a legal finding of joint employment.
