Broadbanding

Broadbanding combines narrower pay grades into fewer, wider salary bands. It can allow more flexibility in pay and career movement without frequent formal grade changes.

Example

An employer replaces several closely spaced professional grades with a broader band and defines how pay decisions will be governed within it.

What to keep in mind

Wider ranges can make progression less transparent and increase inconsistent decisions. Clear criteria, internal-equity checks and manager guidance are needed to prevent flexibility becoming arbitrary pay setting.
